The
Torquay potteries produced commemoratives for all the coronations and
jubilees between 1887 and 1953, as well as a wide variety of military, local
and personal commemoratives; made from local clays and decorated with
traditional coloured slips and sgraffito inscriptions. Sections include
Royal Commemoratives, Politicians and Political Causes, Military
Commemoratives, Personal Commemoratives and Commemoratives which have a
Religious Theme.
The
second section of this colourful volume deals with advertising wares and
Torquay pottery was used to sell a great variety of things, from cigarettes
and alcohol to soap and coal. There were pieces to advertise cafes, hotels
and holiday camps and a whole range of souvenirs from 'The Oldest Chymist
Shoppe in England'. Some of the potteries made items to advertise their own
wares and most contributed to a wide range of perfume bottles.
