Published
in 1993, this 6”x 9” book runs to 88 pages, with 34 colour plates and 61
more in black and white. There are also a number of line drawings and
illustrations of the marks which appear on the base of the pots. The volume
is based on original research by Reginald Score and gives a fascinating
insight into the history of the Dartmouth Pottery and its products.
This
pottery was one of the youngest of the Torquay potteries, being founded in
1948. To many people 'Dartmouth Pottery' means mottoware, gurgling jugs and
monochrome flower holders. Yet their products were infinitely more diverse,
ranging from beautiful art pottery to finely moulded toby jugs and sporting
tankards. More recently, the company's moulded wares included money boxes
and models in the form of animals and birds. These can be found at antique
fairs and flea markets and make an interesting area of collecting at
'affordable' prices.
