Published
in 1978, this 6”x 9” book contains 244 pages plus 141 black and white
plates. There are also 6 colour plates and four line drawings within the
body of the text.
This book
first appeared when the Torquay Pottery Collectors Society was just two
years old and, not surprisingly, the considerable amount of research that
has been undertaken since its publication makes it slightly dated in parts.
Nevertheless, it remains the most complete and definitive work on the
subject and essential reading for any serious collector of Torquay wares.
Perhaps
the book's major weakness is the absence of colour in its many, otherwise
beautifully reproduced, plates but this is more than compensated for by the
weight of research and its readability. Each of the potteries is dealt with
in some depth and examples of many mottoes are given. The examples of
pottery marks are somewhat incomplete and it is suggested that readers
consult the Torquay Pottery Mark Book.
